"Hello all. Last year I replac

"Hello all. Last year I replaced a water pump in my 1957 18 hp evinrude. Well I started the motor in a clean trash can and it was pumping water at first.Then it quit. The water level was more than adequate. Well upon teardown, The center of the coller seperated from the impeller that was now in numerous fragments. CAn someone give me a reason this happened? Other than this, the engine is fine. Any response would be helpfull, Thanks Ken"

Some large object got into the pump house?
You have run it dry even for a short while?

I have not run it dry. I replaced the pump last spring. Could the plate beneath the impeller have caused this? It had several small sharp edges. The kit I ordered from Marine Engine.com has a new plate.Are the parts that I orderd as good quality as the manafacture?It looks as if someone peeled an orange, but the center collar was still in one piece."
