"Normally the tachometer works
"Normally the tachometer works correctly; however, when I last tried the boat out, I failed to turn the 12 Volt power on to the instrument panel (1996 Ranger R72 boat), the RPM readings were approximately double the normal readings. After 12 volt power was restored, the readings were still incorrect. Any ideas as to what happened ? (I have always been of the opinion that the tach was powered from the mercury motor)
