"Does anyone know how to get the lower gear drive case off of this engine ? I removed all the flange bolts, and shift linkage (even the bolt under the exhaust snout, and the unit is loose, but it seems to be hanging up on something. Do I need to remove the prop shaft, or something else ?"

"Frozen drive shaft or tight dowel pins:
Let it hang between two trees (one rope on each end of the motor and pull tight). The horizontal angle will amplify the weight of the motor . If not enough, use something for tensioning the rope even more, e.g. a jack. If you grease the splines and regularly change the waterpump in the future, you will not have that problem again.
