"I have a 1972 Johnson 65hp outboard with an Evinrude 3 button shift switch (R, N, F). The switch has gone bad and I cannot find a replacement anywhere. I heard I could replace it with a 3 position maintained toggle switch. Does anyone know how to do this? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!"

"I have not done the conversion but I looked into this issue because I had a similar concern with my '71 evinrude 50.

First make sure it is the switch that is causing the shift problem. My motor would not shift because someone put the wrong oil into the lower unit. My unit would shift into reverse until I changed the oil to type "C".

Sorry for the typo in the previous post. It should read "would NOT shift into reverse until I put type "C" oil into the lower unit"
