MD5B 75HP cooling water thermostat casting querry

the casting as two copper pipe

the casting as two copper pipes connected into it with rubber seals should there be a hole connecting the through passage between the pipes and the thermostat ? If so what size should the hole be ? At the moment the casting as no hole but there is a lot of rust so any hole could be blocked. There is no bleed hole in the thermostat so when engine starts to pump raw water dose it go to deadend in block until thermostat opens?

There is a small hole in center of housing to allow water into exhaust whem thermostat is closed. It is about 3/16" in diameter. Do not go to large as it will effect flow into engine.

"Many thanks Dickv for the information. I thought there should be a hole to releave the pressure, as the pump pressure on startup was causing one of the copper tubes to move and the rubber seal leaked."
