Cutting out at high speeds

Hi I have a 1987 johnson 110 a

Hi I have a 1987 johnson 110 and runs very well at slower speeds. Once I get it upto around 30 it seems to kick out once in awhile. When this happens it doesn't bog out or doesn't rev up but its almost like it kicks out of gear for a split sec. and back in again. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the reply I did check the lower unit and the oil is not milky and there are no filings on the drain plug magnet. I have been told it could be the stator it has a high and low and that its possible the high is burnt out. Does this sound possible? thanks
