"I have a 1978 mercury 80 hp,model 800,4 cylinder,s/n 5004670.i have replaced the water pump 4 or 5 times since i have had it with no problem.this time i replaced the impellar and can not get it to shift out of forward gear.with the foot off should i be able to duplicate the shifting by turning the shift shaft in the foot and moving the prepellar?i have the manual and have read it but can not make since out of it.it says to have your shifter in forward before you remove the foot which i did.any help would be great and appreciated.thanks in advance.you can call me if you could.thanks again,Bill"
