"If that is a 1970 then there is no linkage. It is electric shift. Check the wire connections under the cowling I believe they are on the right side of the engine as you look at it from the rear. Also, check your oil in the lower unit. Change it and be sure to use the "premium blend" Johnson/Evinrude oil. This is special oil for electric shift units. Nothing else will work correctly. Check your control unit also. Joe Reeves has a test that can be preformed to check the solenoids in the lower unit."
