" I have a pair of '76 Merc 233s (Ford 351), lately on one engine the tach starts jumping around, the RPMs vary wildly and eventually the engine dies and won't restart until the next day.

"Hello DWBJr,

The first thing you want to do is to run jumper wires and switch the tach leads to opposite engines and find out if the tach itself is bad. (They've been known to cause havoc.) Try this first and let us know what happens.

" The problem your having is a know tach problem. It is shorting the electrical system and draining the batteries-thus killing the engine. Disconnect the tach to test this. If it tests bad, replacement is the best solution. "
