"I have a 12v starter from my M47S that needs a little TLC. It runs but was stored for 20 yrs., and I'd like to have someone open it up and renew it. Also, I need to have new bearings put in the generator from the same engine. I won't use it for electricity, since the engine has an alternator, but it needs to be there to drive the water pump. My question: Can I take these two units to the (reputable) auto electric shop nearby, or is it better to pay the big bucks to go to a specialist. I don't think either are very unique, but I'm open to opinions!
Thanks

"You bet. Look for a local shop that rebuilds alternators and starters. I use one in Allentown, PA that's great.

I second Fastjeff on this one.

I second Fastjeff on this one. When I have starter or alternator problems I feel most confident bringing my own unit to an established auto electric shop to have it rebuilt. You got to figure they are going to take more care than some place that does exchanges.
