2003T raw water pump problem

The raw water pump ceased to f

The raw water pump ceased to function and when removed the plastic gear that transfers rotation from the recessed gear had destructed.
Has anyone experienced this problem and any advice as to why this should have occurred?
 
They get brittle from oil and

They get brittle from oil and heat.If pump sucks something up and stops impeller rotation(boom). Install a new gear and away you go.

Thanks Dick. I've sourced a new plastic cog but I'm not sure which way about it sits. Does the cross pin hold it onto the pump shaft or does the cog float in the recess and the pin engage from the front surface.
 
The gear slot drops onto pin o

The gear slot drops onto pin on shaft and allows rotation. Only way to put it on and get clip back onto shaft.
