I HAVE A 96 RINKER W 4.3 V-6 A

I HAVE A 96 RINKER W 4.3 V-6 AND THE RPM GAUGE HAS IT OWN MIND SOMETIMES IT WORKS FINE AND OTHER TIMES IT READS 2000 TO 4000 MORE THAN CORRECT TAP ON GLASS AND IT MAY GO FURHTER HIGHER OR MAY JUST READ NORMAL READINGS ANY IDEAS? NEW TO SITE LOOKS LIKE GOOD INFO

"Likley your tach is fritzed or getting iffy.
Sometimes the connections inside get corroded and they will act all wonky.
I just had to replace mine which was a 1996 Teleflex.

Sometimes they will fail completely and there will be no reading. Sometimes when they fail the boat won't even run, since the tach completes the coil circuit to ground.

You could try playing with the adjustment setting on the back that selects 4/6/8 cylinders. That has been known to get flakey.

"If it is any consolation, mine has been doing that occasionally for about 4 years. It usually only does it briefly on initial startup of the day, and then gradually settles down and behaves for the day. I plan on addressing it (cleaning connections) -- someday..."
