"Hey all,
I have a 1988 6 HP Johnson shortshaft. It runs great, but after each use I notice an oily-residue coming from two small holes (one on each side) right where the lower unit attaches to the rest of the outdrive. There is one small hole on each side, towards the front. It is higher up than the oil fill for the lower unit, so I can't imagine it being gear oil, but wondering where this is coming from?
I've checked the gear oil, and although it seems pretty dirty and needs changing, it is not low.
Thanks!
Randy"

"Those are water drain holes,

"Those are water drain holes, needed for engine that are used in areas that encounter freezing temperatures. It's common for the unburnt fuel/oil mixture to drain down thru those same holes.

To ease your mind, simply check the lower unit gearlube for water and to make sure that it is full of lube."
