"My 1990 johnson 40 hp VRO will not idle. If I pulse the choke button, I can keep it running. My thumb gets tired very quickly.

If I get it above 2500 rpm, it will run fine. High speed is not a problem. When I slow to around 2500 rpm, it will die, unless I pulse the choke button.

Docking at 2500 rpm is quite a challenge!

Any suggestions on what I should look at first?

I have never had any problems with this motor for 16 years. It has always been reliable.

"time to clean the carb, sounds like the idle bleed holes are clogged. if 2 carbs then double that. you might get lucky and remove the mixture screw and blow some air in there but then that crap has to go some where"
 
If the motor has the black pla

If the motor has the black plastic covers on the TWO CARBURETORS you will need to replace them as well.They have warped with time.

"I cleaned the carbs, still the same problem. It will idle at about 1500 RPM with the choke on, but will die if I turn it off or try to slow down the motor. Any other thoughts? Thanks for any help."
