"Hi,
I have a 20 hp merc serial # A701224 can someone tell me what year it is and the correct spark plugs to use with the gap size? I don't have my manual yet.
Thank you in advance

That's a 1985 or 86 Canadi

That's a 1985 or 86 Canadian built motor eh! The records are poor so that's the closest I can give you for the model year (but they were identical anyhow).

You should use NGK plugs - try BP8H-N-10's gapped at .040"

"Thanks for your help. I will

"Thanks for your help. I will get the NGK plugs, right now the plugs are Champion QL78yc in it, would that be the right plug in champion?

"That's probably the Champ

"That's probably the Champion that cross ref's to the NGK, but you really don't want to run champions in older Merc's.

Merc/Yamaha ignitions put out between 40-50000 volts to the plugs - NGK's are designed to handle that much power. The Champions are suited to OMC ignitions that only put out 30-35K - so the resistance is totally different even though the plugs cross ref - all around Mercs will run better with NGK (except some of the new ones that do call for Champion plugs)..."
