Lower Unit removal

"OK, so I've obviously missed something here, but, I want to take the lower unit off of my 1988 Mercury 150. I have a shop manual from Mercury and it says to remove the shift shaft prior to trying to remove the lower unit...how do I remove the shift shaft(I've removed all the nuts and bolts noted in the manual otherwise)? I can't find a removal reference in the manual. Any thoughts?

if you have all 5 nuts an trim

if you have all 5 nuts an trim tab and bolt under tab removed disconnect spedometer hose and pull i like to take them apart in fwd gear and put back together that way i can turn prop to line up splines you cannot remove the shift shaft
