"We are in need of some good advice. Recently whilst under load we have split 2 oil filters. Our mechanic was of trhe assumption that a faulty filter was the cause of the 1st splitting. Noticebly sprayed engine oil all over engine bay, reduced oil pressure etc.
However, after last weekend splitting the 2nd filter, investigations lead us to be believe a possible fault in the Pressure Relief Valve. Any advice would be appreciated..."

"The oil filter used was a correct and genuine Mercury part. The oil pressure generally sits stable, and the gap has been approximately 10 engine hours between the 1st and 2nd oil filter splitting. Today we removed the housing and the pressure relief valve. The inner housing of the valve unit shows wear, and minor indentations (but barely visible to the eye). I assume that the slightest variation under load could possibly create a concern... is that opinion shared?"

"Are you thoroughly warming the motor up before running them at high speed? Oil needs time to warm up, especially in cold-running diesels. Still, one would think the oil pump bypass relief system would prevent this!
