Grinding into Reverse Merc 650

1965 Merc 650 shifts into for

1965 Merc 650 shifts into forward fine all the time but sometimes grinds away trying to get into reverse then eventually goes in. Any ideas?

Check the shift cab

Check the shift cable first. Make sure it moves freely, and that there is no play in the cable end.

Make sure the shift arm is being moved all the way into gear. You can disconnect the cable and shift the linkage by hand to see if there is any difference. You may have to adjust the cable by screwing the plastic bushing that secures it a few turns one way or the other.

" Ekvin, I agree with Tony, first start with the easy stuff. It may be the shift cable or linkage adjustment. However, your motor is displaying a classic symptom of a worn clutch dog and reverse gear. It is typical of nearly all old mercs to have difficulty shifting to reverse when those parts are worn. The only remedy to a worn clutch dog and reverse gear is replacement. "
