"The engine won't crank with either the ignition switch, jumping the starter solenoid or directly by passing the solenoid from the battery directly to the starter. It was cranking fine, now it's so weak it can't even turn the engine over. When I tried the last two options the number two coil (that I bought brand new from MarineEngine.com) started smoking! Help? I'm afraid I fried the coil. This may sound obvious, but could it be the solenoid and not one of those (expensive) starters?"

If you jumped it from the batt

If you jumped it from the battery straight to the starter and it didn't work properly then your starter is bad. Have it rebuilt at your local auto electric shop.

"if the coil started smoking I

"if the coil started smoking I would check the connections to the starter, maybe a bad ground."
