"will be putting a 115 HP 1978 mercury on my boat looks to be easier to use existing steering control it connects to a lever off the front of existing engine,,,,,,,,,,would it be ok to remove the mercury rod where it goes the tilt tube and leave an open hole,, then connect my exist steering cable on the mercury lever where the rod was connected? exist steering is mounted to the splash well with a bracket"

"James, if you are simply talking about an alternate set-up for the steering - splashwell mount instead of the rod through the tilt-tube, that will not create any issues for you.

If I'm understanding your question correctly, yes, you can leave the tilt-tube "open" with no adverse affects - it's open on tiller models since there is no steering cable to go through it..."
