An outboard is really a 2 stag

An outboard is really a 2 stage air processing machine. It compresses air and fuel in the crankcase and then again in the cylinder after it is tranferred. So the fact that in the water it will not start may mean that there is internal wear problems on pistons and rings.Start with a compression test in your trouble shooting.

That is not a good report.Remo

That is not a good report.Remove cylinder head for inspection of cylinders.Sounds to me like the motor needs either a new head gasket or overhaul of entire motor.

London marine. As an expert please explain why a motor will start out of the water but not in the water. The difference in cylinder pressure is not relevent in this case but its a bit of concern due to lost performance

motor was working fine and had

motor was working fine and had plenty of power my mechanic said it should have plenty of life left before rebuild.he said maybe motor should be lifted a little to stop water riding so high when starting will test this week

Bob---Crankcase compression ha

Bob---Crankcase compression has to supply fresh fuel and air above the piston. If a motor is badly worn then this will not happen (water pressure in the exhaust housing)and results in poor starting.Poor crankcase compression is a result of worn piston rings/ crankshaft seals (external leaks) and crankshaft sealing ( internal )and of course the reed valves.

"trim it so prop is out of water
start it up, then trim it down
sounds like a weak battery"
