"Not likely. The manual starter wouldn't allow the engine to be cranked in a counter clockwise direction. Looking directly down at the flywheel, the running direction is clockwise.

Is the engine overheating, have you installed a new water pump assembly? Have you had this engine for some time and it's operated okay in the past, or have you just aquired it recently?

We need some information as to what the problem is and what you may have done."

1961 5 1/2hp model #cd-18s
Bought it 3 years ago, ran good. good water flow.
Turns clockwise when pulling cord.
Pulled motor off and lower unit, the impeller
was fine. Cleaned water flow ports. Put back together, started, still over heats."

"Gordy.... Assuming that no minute amounts of water are entering cylinders, compression is okay and none of the combustion is getting past the sealing areas of the head gaskets to create a stalemate..... I'd install a complete new water pump assembly if for no other reason to eliminate any possibility of the beginning of the cooling system being faulty.

Be sure to seal the pump plate to the lower unit and the impeller housing to the plate to eliminate the possibility of having the pump draw air.

Also, sitting that long, use pressurized air to blow out the water tube etc.... ants/bees just love to build nests in those areas.
