Leaking oil behind prop help

hi all new to the site. i have

hi all new to the site. i have a 88 alpha1 outdrive i jus purchased and its leaking oil from behind the prop. anyone have any ideas on what this could be ? this is my first boat so im not to familiar yet. some people told me it needs to be re sealed but i just want to double check thanks

"Did you pull the prop and find oil coming from the prop shaft seal? Or is oil coming from a loose OD drain screw on the port side of the OD prop shaft bullet housing? If it is from the prop shaft seal then your friends are right about new seals for the shaft.

pull the prop. you will likely

pull the prop. you will likely find some fishing line around the prop shaft. It gets into the seal and tears them up. you can try to pull the line out and see if it still leaks but you will likely have to replace it. I would drain and check for water in the gear lube. Catch it early not much of a problem. catch it late $$$$$$$!
