"Purchased 1988 boat with twin 454 Crusaders with 1000hrs. Boat runs and idles well but do not know history of carbs. How would I know & what are signs if time to rebuild the carbs?

Thinking would like to make sure are running well for reliability and "economy".

Carbs are Rochester Quadrajet.

Cost estimate I recieved to have done is $175 each.

Also anyone have a manual could email me for the Carb? [email protected]

Thanks

"There is no set time, even a rule of thumb. Mostly it is according to the symtoms indicating that the problem is in the carbuerator. Much of the problems come from dirt and the residual varnishy build-up from the gasoline. Those problems can be reduced by good maintainace practices, especially routine changing of the fuel filter and keeping fuel tanks full to reduce condensationm in tanks.

$175 for a good rebuild is about par, toward the high end, for a skilled, reputable, fuel specialist to charge."

"I replaced my quad after the engine wouldnt settle down to a low idle,(1500 rmps lowest i could get w/o stalling) had it rebuilt, which did almost nothing, replaced with new, and has run like a top for two years now. Economically speaking, is it better to rebuild and then replace anyway?"

"RM,
Fast Jeff is right on the money. If it idles great, runs great, sounds great, and does not have any leaks then run it and re-evaluate when an issue arrives.Jeff and I both boat in the Chessepeake and our boats will be in the water in 6-8 weeks for us to see what we have.My carbs are new ones I put on in June and working great when boat was pulled for the winter.Funny things can happen to even new ones over a winter....have fun with the new boat."
