"Hi all; I have a 1950 Chrysler Crown Special (M47S). The serial number is 28955. I have an ad from a 1950 magazine showing the engine as 125 h.p., and a shop manual from later in the 50's (about 1957)showing the engine as 135 h.p. The one obvious change I can see is in the design of the carburetors. Does anyone know what accounts for the 10 h.p. difference? Is it just the carbs? I don't think I want to modify anything, I'm just looking for as much info as I can get on the engine.
Thanks,
Grant"

"Grant,

According to the indexes that I have...

  • M-47-S
  • Starting serial number M47S-1001
  • Ending serial number M47S-11526
  • from 12/13/49 to 10/25/55
  • 125HP @ 3600
  • 250.6 CID
  • M-47-S
  • Starting serial number M47S-20001
  • Ending serial number M47S-24400
  • from 4/20/55 to 2/27/57
  • 135HP @ 3600
  • 265 CID

Larger displacement in the later verison hence the higher HP at the same RPM.

Probably achieved the higher displacement with larger bore on the cylinders but I haven't checked it.

Glad you are going to keep it original!

"Thanks, Andrew - that explains it all.
For the record, I mistyped the serial number - on the brass tag attached to the engine it is M47S R 2895 S (note the spaces). On the block itself, it's stamped M47S 2823 S, so the two numbers don't completely match. I am confident that the engine was never out of the boat from the date of manufacture in 1950/51 until I did it myself, and I can't imagine anyone messing with the tag, so I don't know what that discepancy means.

I have a question regarding the manuals. The one I have, and the many others I've seen, are all for the later part of this series - the 135 h.p. Is there a way to get a Chrysler manual knowing it's from the early 50's?
It's a great board you have; I hope lots of people find it. Grant"

"Grant,

If the serial number is 2895 (or 2823) it would seem to fall into the first serial number range shown above... if the boat was built in 1950/51 that would seem to fall into the 1949 to 1955 production run of the engine... serial number 1001 to 11526.

You're right that the service manuals all seem to be for the 135HP version. I would doubt that there are many differences."
