what does it mean to index the spark plugs?????
 
It simply means that you look

It simply means that you look at a sparkplug and mark where the ground electrode points. You then try that sparkplug in the motor and see where the ground electrode points. If you are not happy you try it in a different hole. (difference in the way the threads start)Do this untill you are happy. It has to do with the way fuel is injected in the newer motors etc.
 
On the Ficht outboard motors y

On the Ficht outboard motors you index the plugs so as to have the spark plug tip facing towards the injector spray of fuel. This ignites the fuel more efficently. It is a little more involved but this is just a simple explanation.

Why OMC didn't simply use surface gap plugs and eliminate this time consuming nonsnese is a mystery to me!
