" my Johnson 9.9 1974hp runs great for 4minutes then suddenly dies. there is no puttering, it just dies suddenly. the engine floods, the spark plugs may also have water on them. I have replaced headgasket, no success.

"If the engine floods (loads up with fuel), either the carburetor is faulty and will require cleaning & rebuilding, or the choke is stuck shut, or the ignition failed which would result in unburned fuel.

I don't understand what you mean by "the spark plugs may also have water on them." The "may" part is confusing. However, water can enter via the head gasket area, the exhaust baffle plate area located on the side of the block, a bad gasket or area where the block is bolted to the lower exhaust housing, or from contaminated fuel.

When the engine dies, check to see if it still has spark. After this four minute running period, after which the engine dies... Is this at all speeds, does it start back up if you pump the fuel primer bulb? Give us a little more info if you can.
