"I am trying to remove the lower unit on my 2001 Honda BF5A in order to get access to the water pump so that I can change the impeller. I've been able to loosen the unit, but what appears to be the shift rod is holding the unit to the shaft. Can someone tell me how to disconnect the shift rod?"
 
The black rubber plug!!!! abov

The black rubber plug!!!! above the lower unit.It hides the shift connecter.

"Thanks for the information. I was able to get in and disconnect the shift rod, then replace the water pump impeller.

It's amazing how long a job can take when I don't know what I'm doing!"
