"My starter spins but doesn&#3

"My starter spins but doesn't raise up to contact the flywheel. I tried hitting it with a hammer, but that didn't work. If I try spray it with carb cleaner or WD-40 will that help? Or, should I try to find a rebuild kit, or just buy a new one? Thanks"

"If the starter is spinning at its proper speed, then yes, WD-40 will help. This is usually caused by someone greasing or over oiling the bendix gear assembly which collects dirt which results in binding."
