"I have recently acquired both a 1963 Johnson 5.5 and a 1963 Evinrude 18. They run well, but each has a few problems.

First off, I want to make sure that the impellers and thermostats are new and operating properly for each motor. What parts should I consider, and where is the best place to purchase them.

Secondly, the transom mounting bracket on the 18 hp Evinrude has a hair line crack. I want to know if the bracket is made of magnesium or aluminum before I attempt to weld/repair the crack (I will be using a TIG). I cannot find information about motor mounting bracket composition.

Finally, what fuel/oil ratio's should I run on these motors? My 1985 Yamaha wants 100:1, but I can't believe that those older motors will last long on such a lean oil ratio. Also, what brand of 2-cycle oil should I run in these motors.
