Dead wet spark plug

i have a 1970 sears 5hp motor

i have a 1970 sears 5hp motor 217-58990 model

i am having 2 issues with it:

1. won't start up on its own unless you spray fuel into the carb

2. after about an hour of running the spark plug get all black and wet and engine will die out running to lean/rich

all help appreciated

"Lou, sounds like it is time to clean the carb and possibly rebuild.

Your motor was built by Eska for Sears. And Eska got the powerhead from Tecumseh (still very much in business).

In fact if you find a small engine dealer you can look for a Tecumseh carb kit #643-15 which would give you all that is required for a rebuild.

Also, ensure you are mixing your gas/oil at 24:1 with normal 2 cycle engine oil (for lawnmowers/chainsaws) - not Marine TCW-3 oil."
 
hello all. i just bought a Jon boat that came with a Elgin 5 hp model # 217-58990. it looks like it is air cooled? I can see cooling fins in the head and doesn't appear that there is any kind of water pick up. I know from what I've read that the exhaust is water cooled as it is in the water at the lake but is the engine air cooled?
