i have a old mercruiser top mo

i have a old mercruiser top mount single lever.1971 searay with a 165hp straight six cyl.coming out of the bottom of the shifter is a black and a white wire.where do they go.black-ground i guess/white-goes where.thank you

Are those the only wires connected to it? Neutral safety switch is yellow w/red stripe and interrupts power to the slave solenoid when not in neutral so the engine can't be started. Is there a light in the controller? It would need a ground and a power source.

"if you mean "control box" the 2 wires are for the neutral interlock .this can be checked with a ohm meter.N/C in neutral

If you mean where the shift cables are attached at the engine side, this is the "shift interupter", wired black to ground, white to neg side of coil."

"The white wire you see, is probably a faded out yellow that goes to the "slave" solenoid or in other terms, the starter solenoid. The black wire goes to the ignition key switch.
As BT indicates, it is a neutral interlock safety switch"
