"I am looking at a 1983 40' Egg Harbor with 1995 454 Crusaders. The owner says that the engines top out at 3300, which I think is way low. Shouldn't they be at least 4000-4400rpm? The props are 24x23 with 2.5:1 gears. Any insight would be appreciated."

From what you say, its seems clear that the boat was repowered and they used the original props. 24 is to large for the engines. The Egg was a well built vessel, i.e. heavy. 454's would have been my last choice, diesel is what this boat needed. Talk to a prop shop, try to go up 500rpm, and you would be close to the right rpm."

I run a 30 bertram w/ same engine. Props are 18x17 and run 4400.

3300 is WAY to low. The props sure sound to large. Is there any cup on the props? Talk to a god prop shop. They can help to get the best out of your engines. 3300 means that the engines are always working hard which will reduce their life tremendously. It's like you are pulling a barge. Even a slow speed isn't good on these props.
