" When I try to start my engine the starter motor only stays engaged to the flywheel for a very short duration, not allowing the motor to start. It always eventually starts but only after many attempts. Any ideas? "

"I'm assuming that the battery is fully charged and that the starter is cranking at a normal rpm.

Check the teeth of both the starter bendix drive and the flywheel. THere are times that the bendix becomes worn, but not noticed right away. This results in having the underside of the flywheel teeth worn away in various areas at an upward angle.

Unfortunately, if the flywheel teeth are worn in the above manner, the cure is to replace the flywheel..... and of course the bendix drive.
