" I have a 1985 90 HP VRO evinrude that was modified to remove the oil injection system and run on 50/1 some years back, with no ill effects. This season it has been running great up 3/4 throttle, then starves for fuel. Squeezing primer bulb picks power back up. I have used a separate portable tank and hose to eliminate restrictions in the built in fuel tank/system as a cause. It appears the fuel pump is going bad. Can the VRO pump (~$260) be replaced with a regular diaphragm style fuel pump (~$60) on this engine? Thanks! "

"Buck.... You can install a regular fuel pump on that engine with no modifications.

Look at the port (left) side of the intake manifold, down about level with the center of the bottom carburetor. you'll see a flat portion there that has two threaded holes... one on each side of that flat portion. In the center of that flat area, there is a sealed screw (plug). Removing that screw (plug) allows you to install the regular fuel pump and related gasket.
