when I idle in N all is well. When I put in R it kills. When I amd in F and pull back to N, it kills. Is this an easy repair/adjustment for a non-mechanical kinda guy? "

" Not really. Sounds like the short shift cable requires replacment. This job requires leg removal , old cable removed from gimble houseing, new cable installed/ then reassambly and adjusted. Some special tools make the job faster and proper adjustment specs are required. "

I have an 87 sea ray and I was having a similar problem where once I shifted into gear it would sputter for several seconds. It ended up being the spring that is shaped like a v that fits into the housing where the micro switches are.
