" I am replacing the water pump on this 6hp evinrude 1970, THE MANUAL is 1973 SAYS PUT IT IN FORWARD GEAR ,REMOVE 4 SCREWS FROM GEAR HSG., DROP GEAR HSG ENOUGH TO GET TO THE SHIFTING SCREW AND REMOVE IT HAVE DONE ALL THAT BUT IT STILL SEEMS TO BE CONECTED SOME WHERE ,CAN YOU GIVE ME ANY INFORMATION TO REMOVE THE GEAR HSG? THANKS "

"Howard.... Some of those models have a pin through the upper portion of the driveshaft which needs to be aligned with a slotted passageway.

Turn the prop or flywheel somewhat while applying a slight bit of pressure downward on the gearcase. If that pin exists, you'll feel it when it aligns, then the gearcase will drop away.
