" Noticed this weekend that I could not rev the engine above 2400rpm beyond which is just produced lots of black smoke. Starts OK, runs @ 2000rpm apparently fine, idles OK and temperature normal. "

The black smoke is caused by

The black smoke is caused by excessive fuel in relation to the air the engine is taking in.

Can be caused by any of the following - REstricted air flow (dIrty air filter).

poor turbo performance

dirty injectors.

Excessive load on engine - wrong prop size.

Could just be something wrapped round the prop shaft.

has this just come on suddenly? has the engine ever pulled more rpm than this.

check the easy stuff first like the air filter
