I have 1965 40 hp johnson it

I have 1965 40 hp johnson it runs great for 2 to 5 minutes then one cycliner dies in the manual it says to check the coil polarity and according to the book the polarity is reversed but it dosnt tell me how to make it right?? thanks

"Your question really belongs in the "Outboard" section.

However, I don't know what manual you're reading but there is no polarity to those coils. There is a primary winding (points) that connects internally to a secondary winding (s/plug), and a ground wire.... that's it. Any reversal of polarity would be due to a change in the poles of the flywheel magnets which is impossible as they are "Permanent Magnets" that do not disapate.

The spark on that model (with the plugs out) should jump a 1/4" gap with a strong blue wide lightning like spark at all throttle settings, and the armature plate on which the points, coils etc are attached should not have any wobble to it.

If you continue on with this thread, move it to "Outboards".
