I just received this old engine and want to use it as a kicker. It appears it has always been a rope start engine. There are two wires under the cowl. Should they just be tied to opposite sides of a grounding switch? Anything special I should know about the wiring before I tank test this engine?

"Wade.... Those two wires under the cowl; where do they lead to? If they are black in color and lead to the timer base, each wire going to one set of ignition points.... then yes, they would go to a grounding, stop type switch. I'd suggest that you trace all the wires to know exactly where they go and what they are there for to avoid any problems that do not exist at the present time.

" If you pull the cover off my 25 hp 1970's johnson you will see the two wires coming out from underneath the cowl; They are the only two obvious wires you will find anywhere on this motor. They go to the kill switch, which I believe works by shorting out the ignition. "
