Need help. I want to change

Need help. I want to change the water pump. I unbolted all lower unit bolts. Gently tapped the lower unit and it dropped about 3/4" and then stopped. Where do I disconnect the shift linkage from the powerhead to allow the unit to be removed. Or does it slip out like the drive shaft.

" Joe,
I'm not sure but, look under the carbs to see if there's a screw or bolt that holds the shift linkage. Haven't seen the "Mercury Dude" on this board lately. Maybe he will help you on this pblm. "

The shaft is splined. Make sure all bolts have been removed. There is one under the trim tab on the housing. It is possible that the shaft has a little corrosion. Be careful and check. If all bolts have been removed, try pushing the lower unit back up and then pull down. This will get a little more movement.
Good Luck and have Fun on the Water "
