    That would be for the 390972 kit which uses the 390973 forward gear. I have the 390970 kit with the 390971 forward gear. It says use thrust washer with 390971, but the one from the original gear is too thick to fit.

    So, no thrust washer there at all? You're probably correct. There is barely enough of a recess in the gear to even hold one in place. I can't seem to attach photos or I would.

    racerone, There is very little free play without the thrust washer. Just enough to let things rotate smoothly. Less then 1/16 inch. I'd say .050, maybe 060. With the original washer in place, it will not go into the gearcase. None was included in the kit.
