    Engine Won't Idle Down

OK, I'm going to take another stab at this idle speed problem. It's a '79 merc 140 2 stroke that won't idle any lower than about 1500 rpm and this is even with linkages taken loose. The carbs have been overhauled and taken apart and rechecked and I've shot carb cleaner all around the carbs and...

    Starter won't stay engaged

1979 140 hp 6 cyl 2 stroke engine. The starter won't stay engaged long enough to start the engine easily, it kicks out or the bendix retracts too quickly as the engine is just trying to start. It seems that I've seen some posts that indicate that this is not unusual buit would like to know if...

1979 140 hp hard to start cold

Ok, I'm going to have to ask for some help on this starting problem of mine. I have a '79 140 horse straight 6 engine that is outfitted like an '80 model, has single float on the side carbs and individual coils. The engine has good compression (I had to rebuild it), the carbs have been rebuilt...

The Bioat Has Been Sold But I Still Have The Prop

I seems I have a stainless prop with no boat so if anyone is interested in it it's a Michigan Wheel Ballistic propeller #305029 for the smaller Johnson/Evenrudes 10 1/8 x 13. Except for a little exhaust soot you couldn't tell it's not new, asking $200. Supported Johnson Evinrude Outboard...

    crankshaft end play

Perhaps one of you guys that build 2 strokes regularly might offer an opinion, I am finally building my 1999 14 hp and the crank end play is only .002 which is a lot too tight, do I have to shim both the top and bottom end caps? I see that the shim kit for the bottom is hard to find and much...

    Same engine w/different horsepower?

I've been wanting to ask how did mercury go about getting hp ratings from 90 to 150 from the same basic engine? My 79 140 horse is at the upper end of that range but since I have it torn down right now anyways another 10 hp might be nice to have if it wasn't something big.

    2 stroke crankshaft machining?

I want to verify that 2 stroke cranks can't be turned due to a lack of oversize replacement needle bearings. Could one of you guys that work on these things regularly comment please. Thanks Bob

Fuel requirements for 1979 140 outboard

What octane fuel is needed for my 1979 140 hp outboard? Mercury says 95 octane but that can't be pump gas, that's in racing fuel territory. I think regular 87 is ok but just want to check.

    Still no reverse!

I guess this is a continuation of my previous thread about reverse grinding when engaging but there are some differences. Background Info: I had a problem with the dogs on reverse clattering during engagement and binding up the gears. So far I've replaced the shift rod, shift cam and installed...

    grinding sound when shifting

OK, I thought I was out of the woods but not yet. The motor is a 1979 merc 140 that grinds the gears when shifting forward and reverse with the engine running like a car when the clutch isn't pushed in properly, shifts ok when the engine off. After a couple of shifts (sometimes just one) the...

    transmission stays in forward

We recently got a 1977 Glastron bass boat with a 1979 140 hp Merc on it. This rig has been sitting for an unknown number of years and needed some big time tlc so I never got to hear it run (for $200 you don't sweat the small stuff). Among other things I dropped the lower unit to replace the...
