    1986 Johnson V4 140 Looper - Overheating problem

Ok, no love on that question. I've been doing some research & found that eliminating the water control valve is an option, by updating the cooling system to the 1993+ design. Looks like I'll need: 333967 — COVER, THERMOSTAT STBD. (1 required per assembly) 329830 — GASKET, THERMOSTAT COVER (2...

    1986 Johnson V4 140 Looper - Overheating problem

Good question. The shop manual doesn't distinguish between Loop-charged and cross-flow blocks, with regard to diverter/restrictor installation. It only distinguishes between "typical water passage restrictor" and "V4 water circulation and waterpassage restrictor" locations. Also, I don't see...

    Johnson shift shaft length measurement

My model number? My model number is... not on the unit. :-/ When I bought the boat & motor, the motor had been repainted (very badly) and the model/serial number tag had been removed. He said it was an '86 & that's what it's registered as, but I have been unable to verify it. Even the welch...

    Johnson shift shaft length measurement

I fairly recently bought a Cape Horn 17 with a Johnson 140 on the back. It was a little finicky about shifting, but worked ok. Thing was, when I went from forward to neutral, I really had to shift past neutral (toward reverse) before it would actually disengage the forward gearing. Not a big...

    1986 Johnson V4 140 Looper - Overheating problem

Well, SOB, someone get me strait. Are there separate diverters for the head and for the block? I'm no pro (probably very obvious, at this point) & am just trying to figure out this overheating issue. I thought I had found the issue with the "missing" diverters, but maybe not. Here are some...

    1986 Johnson V4 140 Looper - Overheating problem

Damnit! Now you have me unsure. I THOUGHT diverters were needed in all the V4 engines. What do you know that I don't? So far, everything I've seen says there should be two diverters on each side of the block. Here's what I have from the service manual:

    1986 Johnson V4 140 Looper - Overheating problem

OK, I could only do the single picture, so... OK, it must have been the picture size. Shrunk by 50% and they worked. Anyhow, it appears the diverters are missing. Possible cause? Also, is there a reason (besides the obvious) that the head is marked with the text depicted???

    1986 Johnson V4 140 Looper - Overheating problem

This morning I got into the starboard head (and the one with the temperature sender in it.) Here's what I found:

    1986 Johnson V4 140 Looper - Overheating problem

This engine came on a boat I bought a few months ago. It originally had no temp gauge. While out, we got clogged water intakes & the thing overheated and shut down. Never an alarm, or any other warning. Since that time, I have (of course) cleaned the intake & also replaced the water pump...
