Separating coil/Distributor power from everything else.

Carburetted 5.7 I/O, formerly Mercruiser, I bought the boat with a gaffed engine electrical harness. I pieced it back together and got it running well, but I've been nagged by a problem with the engine losing power and dying. Been towed back 3 times. The last time was on a troubleshooting run...

    5.7 Timing

I finally got my PMC 5.7 running. The timing was messed with by the P.O. so I've dialed it in by ear best I can. The specs I can find call for 4 deg. BTDC for the standard motor and 10 deg. BTDC for the Hi Po motor. Mind you, the whole thing is somewhat of a mutt, with a Mallory 609 ignition...

Best replacement flywheel for GM 5.7

I need to replace the flywheel on my PCM 5.7 due to chewed up teeth. I only want to do this once so i want to use a good quality part. The one that came out is probably OEM since GM is cast into it. Its the standard 14" weighted flywheel. Any recommendations or brands to avoid?

    Engine wiring harness connector

The wiring is currently just butt spliced at the engine. I really want a quick way to disconnect everything for pulling the motor when needed. I bought both female and male plugs like this

    Engine wiring harness connector

The P.O. of my boat had cut the plug out of the engine wiring harness and butt connect the wires rather than try to repair a loose connection. I have to pull the engine to replace the starter ring gear so it would be a good time to splice in a new connector if possible. The engine is a PCM...

    Troubleshooting no-start condition

Long story here, and looking for anything I might have missed in troubleshooting a no-start condition: Last fall I purchased a nice-condition Slickcraft 279SC with carburetted 5.7L and Alpha One outddrive. The boat had not been on the water in 2021 because the PO could not get it started. He...

What am I looking at here?

I just got this boat home and need to sort it our a bit. By the attached pic, someone has bypassed an overload switch of some sort Klixon switch with red wires attached to one terminal). What was it supposed to protect? And what is the other, similar looking device with heavy red wires attached?

    Winterizing a non-running I/O

I recently acquired a boat with a fresh-water cooled Pleasurecraft 350 coupled to a SEI106 (Merc knock-off). I bought the boat as a non-runner, last-minute-before-winter fire sale purchase. Since winters is here, I just need to ensure the engine is winterized, and wrap the boat up. Although the...

Merc Alpha 1 reliability - things to look for when buying

I'm out looking at older boats, mostly because I'm a cheap SOB that doesn't mind working on fixing stuff and don't like the uber-sculpted styling of late model boats. I found a 23' cruiser type boat with Merc 5.7L/Alpha 1 drive. A bunch of guys I know all say I/O's are unreliable, and to avoid...

    Port engine toast?

I've been working the bugs out of the 318s in our 78 Silverton 31. Mostly working past cooling issues. Just when it seemed I might have a good season, what looks like major problems have surfaced on the port engine. Background is, boat had not been used much in recent years and had been...

Wiring for 2 motors, 3 batteries, 2 switches

I'm re-commissioning our 40 year old Silverton and I'm trying to make sense of and organize the battery wiring. We bought the boat in the water 2 years ago, used it casually for the rest of that season while we assessed its needs, and we've been out of the water working on stuff since. As my...

    LM318 - coolant overflowing

I spent last season debugging cooling issues with the Twin 318s in my "new" 78 Silverton 31. I replaced a leaking heat exchanger on the port engine and all seems fine there now. The starboard engine has me miffed though. It would run at 160 or so at cruising speeds, but run hot at idle speeds...

    Coolant out exhaust

Although the starboard engine cooling system was giving me fits until last weekend (new raw water pump, new thermostat, sealed leaking raw water strainer), the port engine on my '78 Silverton was running cool and losing no fluids - until last weekend. Just when it looked like I had a squared...
