98 Volvo 3.0 is all put back together. Help with re-start please!

As you all probably know, I've pretty much went through the entire engine and its components. I have had the cylinder head worked by a machine shop (valves were not seating, head was warped, head gasket blown, block was still level though; looks like someone allowed it to overheat since the...

    Holley 2300 rebuild questions.

Hey guys, I’m rebuilding the Holley 2300 that is on my Volvo 3.0. I have a few questions. 1. The instructions say to “turn the idle limiter caps to its leanest position and remove the cap. Observe and record the initial position of the needle slot. Turn the needs until lightly seated...

Call for help, again. I’m putting the 3.0 back together.

As many of you know, I had issues with the 98 Volvo 3.0 I acquired. It had an exhaust leak and was seeing signs of a little water in the oil. Troubleshooting showed a blown head gasket and a cracked manifold. A leak down test showed air escaping out of the valves. A compression test showed...

How do you know when it is time to replace points, distributor cap, and rotor?

Is this something you do just because “it has been a while,” or is there a test or symptoms that can be used as a determinator? Also, a related question, the tune-up kit looks like it only contains the cap and rotor. Is that correct? I have searched and can not find just points.

To test compression, do i need to intall pushrods?

I want to do a compression test to see if the cylinder head job fixed my compression issue. If I am going to to have to remove the cylinder head, if the compression is not there, I would prefer to not waste time with installing the rest of the head. So, do I have to reinstall the push rods, set...

About to reinstall cylinder head. Any tips?

I had the cylinder heads off a GM 4cyl iron block marine engine worked by a machine shop. I am now ready to install it. I have a Fel-Pro head gasket and have cleaned the top of the block really well. What else do I need to do to properly reinstall the head? Should I do any cleaning of the bolt...

Is my block clean enough for a new head gasket?

I scrapped for an hour with a razor blade. Does it look clean enough? If not, what should I use? Also, what should I use as a straight edge to make sure the block is not warped?

Are all head gaskets created equal?

I am about to order a new head gasket. Are they all pretty much the same? Any to avoid?

99 Volvo 3l, Bad compression, leak down tests shows valve blow-by, pictures inside, help

My manifold had a crack in it causing water intrusion. The first compression test shows erroneous results; some cylinders with no compression. The second compression tests showed cylinder one 80/90, cylinder two 140/150, cylinder three 95/100, and cylinder four 90/159. That’s dry/wet numbers. I...

Volvo 3l. Trying to find TDC. Starter turns engine over too much to land on TDC.

As the title says, I can't see how it is possible to get a socket on the crank nut, with the engine in the boat, to find TDC. Am I missing something?

A little water in oil. Should I run it to heat up the oil before oil change?

I had a cracked manifold that let a little water in the oil. Should I run it a bit to heat up the oil, or go ahead and change it cold? How many flushings should be sufficient? Do I need to change out the oil filter each time?

So my manifold is cracked ;(

So I did an acetone test on the manifold on my 1999 Volvo 3 liter. I poured the acetone into the hose that connects to the manifold, and next thing I knew, it was filling up the exhaust port of the manifold. I hope I did it right. Okay, I need a manifold. Where should I order it from? Does it...

Compression test with carb removed; stopping gas from being pumped out line.

I am about to do a compression test on my Volvo 3 liter. The engine has the manifold and carb off of it. I'm assuming that the fuel pump is going to be pumping fuel out of the fuel line when I turn the engine over for the test. Any advice on how to deal with this?

1999 3.0 Volvo sounds like an old-school hit & miss engine

I just had all fluids changed and the engine gone through to make sure it was in good shape. Today, I was riding around and I started hearing an air noise from the engine that sounded like and old-school hit & miss engine. The engine also sounded like it may have valve chatter. Any ideas with...
