    the impeller could be fine...it could be the exhaust elbows being clogged and restricting the water flow...

    you can add water pressure gauges to the exhaust elbows...FastJeff did it on his old...

    on a late 90's 7.4 MPI engine, the sensor at the thermostat housing with yellow and black wires is the ECT sensor...

    a lot depends on the specific ECU on the engine and the code programmed into...

    If the motor will slide "up and down ok", then there shouldn't be any problem getting things to lay flat....in other words, if you can 'lower' the prop from the position shown in your third pic, say...
