Re: 3YM30 cuttiing out at sea

Probably debris in the tank momentarily blocking the pickup. I doubt the exhaust being under water is the cause. Military and some yachts exhaust underwater to limit noise. Since it was just...
  2. Re: minnkota intermittently turns off on off on when in 4th or 5th gear

I don't know your model, but the circuit breaker is easy to trip when running flat out for extended periods on some motors. I don't know where the circuit board is, I suppose inside the housing. But...
  3. Re: minnkota intermittently turns off on off on when in 4th or 5th gear

Do you have a automatic circuit breaker in line? Also look at the circuit board for signs of burning or overheat.
  4. Re: HELP PLEASE!!! Purchasing New Boat Detroit 8V53

I've used Detroits most of my life, about 60 years. They're the only engine of it's size I will use on the ocean. But good engines or not, you need to have a mechanical survey by a real Detroit...

    Re: Starting problems

The solenoid disk and contact points have bad spots. The contact points go to the battery cable or the starter. When you energize the solenoid a copper disk that spans the two contacts, moves to...
  7. Re: Water draining from radiator on perkins 4108

Depending the type of thermostat, it may block some, or most of the air from leaving the engine when it's filled. That's why some thermostats come with a small hole in the plate. It allows the air...
  8. Re: Water draining from radiator on perkins 4108

Are you calling the heat exchanger the radiator or do you really have a radiator? Is the 4108 in a tractor?
Sometimes the thermostat will keep the engine from filling with water and an overheat...

Re: Mercruiser 7.3 V8 Turbo Diesel.

I think that is the same engine in Ford F-250 trucks from 1997 to 2003. I have one in a truck. Usually when they stop suddenly it's one of the many electronic parts. The injectors work by high...

    Re: Engine not running right

Could be the tank pick up tube. A piece of debris might move over the tube when the fuel shifts.

    Re: 5L Mercruiser stops running

When it fails to crank, I'd check voltage at the solenoid. My guess is a bad contact, maybe in the ground leg. I'd clean all cable connections from the battery to the engine and solenoid.

    Re: 1990 smokercraft floor replacement

Some people just glass a new piece of close fitting plywood over the old. Most small boat builders do a good job on the hull and a poor fiberglassing job on the floors. If you pour expanding foam...

Re: Nasty black sediment in fuel filter

Probably from the tank. Organisms grow in the bottom of the tank below the fuel if there is any water. The black is their waste. It's acidic and will eventually eat holes in metal tanks. The solution...

Re: 12V71 Twin-Disc Gear Water in the Gear

Your friend should have the engines checked by a qualified mechanic with Detroit experience before buying the boat. Some Volvo or other brand mechanic isn't going to be useful. Rebuilding a 12v71 is...

    Re: my md5

A diesel needs fuel and heat (or enough compression to raise the air temp to above 500F). In cold weather an older engine may not have enough compression to raise the temperature inside the cylinder...

    Re: 471 hydraulic govner

That governor was optimized for 1200 rpm. And there's no easy way to make it variable speed. It would be easier to put another governor on. eBay usually has someone parting out a Detroit. Also you...
