  1. Re: Oil leak ABOVE the lower unit? 90hp 1983 Johnson 2stroke (J90TLCTE)

faztbullet, thanks for asking: I did reconnect the hose to the airbox drain nipple. However, I have not been replacing the gasket between the airbox and the silencer - could this be a possible...
  2. Re: Oil leak ABOVE the lower unit? 90hp 1983 Johnson 2stroke (J90TLCTE)

Thanks a bunch, fdrgator - this is what I was worrying about. It is clearly coming from about the lower unit, but it didn't make sense to me b/c it's a 2-stroke and not a 4-stroke. I always...
  3. Oil leak ABOVE the lower unit? 90hp 1983 Johnson 2stroke (J90TLCTE)

    Hi All,

I've recently gotten a 90hp 1983 Johnson 2-stroke running. Issues were all related to fuel, and after replacing the fuel pump, all fuel lines, and rebuilding the carbs (twice - the first...
  4. Re: 1983 Johnson 90HP: runs if I increase the throttle on start, but dies in idle

I had rebuilt the carbs a few weeks ago. At a friend's suggestion, I took the carbs back off to inspect them to make sure the idle/low speed jets were still clear. Every jet and orifice in both carbs...
  5. Re: 1983 Johnson 90HP: runs if I increase the throttle on start, but dies in idle

Compression is still good on all cylinders: 121 120 119 119, and all four cylinders have strong spark
  6. Re: 1983 Johnson 90HP: runs if I increase the throttle on start, but dies in idle

    Last I ran one was a couple weeks ago. 120, 119, 121, 120 - should I run one again?
  7. 1983 Johnson 90HP: runs if I increase the throttle on start, but dies in idle

    Hi All,

I realize this is a question that has been asked a million times, but I think I've covered a number of the standard bases.

My 1983 Johnson 90hp has newly cleaned/rebuilt carbs, new fuel...

    Electric Troller as a Backup

    Hi All,

I'm considering putting on an electric trolling motor as an emergency backup to get me to shore in the event that I get stranded. I have an 18' Starcraft Starchief (1964), with a 1983 90HP...
  9. Re: Johnson 90HP (1983) died in first sea trial

SO ... I visually scrutinized the outside of the powerhead including all electrical devices and connections and anything that will carry a load, took off the bypass cover and looked inside, and found...
  10. Re: Johnson 90HP (1983) died in first sea trial

Found a lower carb at a shop 10 minutes away. I'm gonna see what else I can learn about this motor before I buy it.
  11. Re: Johnson 90HP (1983) died in first sea trial

THANKS, yes we are on the same page. I already have a screwdriver with a long and extremely think shank that fits down there, and happened to fit exactly. I was able to get the jets out of the top...
  12. Re: Johnson 90HP (1983) died in first sea trial

    THANKS, will do this.

Also, more info: when I took the carbs off I looked into the intakes to the cylinders. The top two of course were squeaky-clean:

  13. Re: Johnson 90HP (1983) died in first sea trial

is the venturi size stamped on the front of the carburetor? It looks like my carb reads "1-3/16" - does it need to be identical, or right in that area?
  14. Re: Johnson 90HP (1983) died in first sea trial

Ugh ... all of this ... what I was worried about. What other means could lead to this?

    J90TLCTE

    Yes it is!
  15. Re: Johnson 90HP (1983) died in first sea trial

THANKS, great idea and I will keep some of that on hand in the future, just in case

yes - see most recent post

See my most recent post above - this jet may be the most difficult to get...

  17. Re: Johnson 90HP (1983) died in first sea trial

I think I found the culprit. The V4 motor has two double-barrel carburetors. The upper carburetor is clean as a whistle. The lower looks like it has been packed full of sand. Is this even worth...
  18. Re: Johnson 90HP (1983) died in first sea trial

Also in the spirit of "Give these fine gentlemen as much info as possible", the motor has been 'pissing' vigorously throughout.

ALSO: I'm playing the part of the fool this weekend, but since my...
  19. Re: Johnson 90HP (1983) died in first sea trial

    Many thanks for the responses.

Boobie, re: compression, the seller indicated that, in February 2019, he had tested and found all cylinders between 125-130, but I did not test myself and I will go...
  20. Re: Johnson 90HP (1983) died in first sea trial

By "the harness on the right side" I mean: gas was leaking from where the control and battery cables enter the powerhead from outside.
