    A 7.4 =454 CUBIC INCH

    They are 325 hp and higher depending on model.

    There is no doubt what you have for an ignition is an Automotive not Marine, GM HEI...

    I was also thinking a HEI Delco but due to his name I felt he was in northern Europe.
    I wasnt sure they would have that distributor available there.

    Where do you live ? USA or somewhere else?

    No,
    If the distributor has the correct sensor you will see two threaded studs sticking out of the side of the base of the distributor.

    Take the cap off and look inside distributor.

    Those wires go to the sensor inside the distributor.
    If your sensor has two threaded studs it is an old sensor.

    I am assuming the two wires you are speaking of come from the timing control...

    Why a new battery and are you sure the connections are good and tight?
    Did you mistakenly damage the starter or any of its connections when reconnecting battery cable?...

    I would suggest looking for a few dead 3.7's
    There are thousands lying around and try to get a good cover and replace the seals and be done with it.

    Non center bolt valve covers ....2 piece rear main seal.

    Note: as seen before from poster...copy and paste.

    1986 had a 2 piece rear main seal.
    Not sure any of the info for 1986 is accurate based on the obvious copy and paste.

    The 86 is two piece rear main seal, different coupler attached ro flywheel,
    Possibly different flywheel.

    The Key gasket is the head gasket. It cannot be stamped steel. It needs to be marine grade and or stainless steel.
    Raw water not antifreeze mix passes thru it and if stamped steel it will rust away...
